CrossingGuard® School Bus Stop Arm Enforcement

Over the years, school bus safety has come a long way. From seat belts to security cameras, we've gone all out to protect our children inside the school bus.

But what about outside the bus

More Common Than You Think
Every driver has seen it – that flashing school bus arm telling drivers to stop so the bus’ young passengers can get on or off safely. As parents, we take for granted that drivers will show concern for our children by actually stopping.

Shockingly, studies have revealed that thousands of drivers disregard these signs every school day, illegally passing a parked school bus and putting our children in serious danger.

A 2008 survey by the Texas Transportation Institute counted a total of 12,850 stop-arm violations on a single school day – based on these findings, the researchers estimated that nearly 3 million violations occur during a typical school year in the state.

“It’s clear that our school children are at risk every day,” said Associate Research Scientist Patricia Turner, who conducted the study. “Stop-arm violations are more common than anyone realizes, except the bus drivers who see it every day.”

Protecting Our Children
Road Safety Cameras have had a significant impact in making our roads safer by reducing such violations as speeding and red-light running. This technology has shown that consistent and continuous coverage by the cameras dramatically changes driver behavior in a positive way.

For this reason, it only makes sense to take these life-saving cameras to the next level to protect the lives of the roughly 26 million children who ride a school bus to and from school every day.

To meet this imperative safety need, ATS is proud to announce our latest Road Safety Camera solution, the CrossingGuard® School Bus Stop Arm Enforcement System.

Designed to monitor and enforce traffic along side of a stopped school bus, the CrossingGuard® system gives school districts an additional tool to protect our children as they travel to and from school each day.

CrossingGuard System Features

  • The CrossingGuard School Bus Stop Arm Enforcement System is completely automated and requires no school bus driver intervention, allowing drivers to remain focused solely on the children.

  • Activated when a school bus’ stop arm is extended, the system’s high-resolution cameras capture both images and video of violating events, which are wirelessly uploaded to ATS’ Axsis Violation Processing System.

  • Every violation image is accompanied by a detailed Violation Data Bar, indicating the violation time and date as well as the school bus’ number and GPS coordinates.

  • All violation data are initially analyzed by experienced ATS representatives – a final review of the evidence is conducted by law enforcement personnel, who provide the official approval or rejection of the violation. If the violation is approved by law enforcement, a citation is automatically mailed to the vehicle’s registered owner.
