Newton County Schools Partner with ATS For School Bus Stop Arm Safety Initiative

Newton County, GA — The Newton County School System will partner with American Traffic Solutions (ATS) to deploy CrossingGuard®.  This new technology was developed in direct response to the growing desires of school districts, parents, PTAs and communities across the country to keep children safe while boarding or disembarking school buses.

“Student safety is always our primary focus,” said Michael Barr, Director of Support Services for Newton County Schools.  “This initiative provides us with a way to educate motorists about school bus stop laws and the dangers posed by drivers that violate these laws. By educating drivers and changing dangerous driving behaviors, we are better able to protect the lives of the children who ride a school bus to and from school every day.  We are pleased to have this additional tool as part of our overall safety program.”

The CrossingGuard® school bus arm safety solution, mounts high-resolution cameras to the front and rear driver’s side of a school bus to capture the entire violation event.  When the stop arm is deployed, the system detects if a vehicle passes the stopped school bus within the enforcement zone.

The violation video and license plate images are then reviewed by law enforcement for approval prior to a citation being issued.  In Georgia, the penalty for a violation will warrant the vehicle’s owner a $300 fine for the first violation, a $750 fine for the second, and a third violation in a five-year period will result in a $1,000 fine.

“We are excited about this collaboration between the Newton County Sheriff’s Office, Newton County Schools and American Traffic Solutions,” said Deputy Superintendant Dennis Carpenter.

“This new technology addresses the needs of our citizens and requirements for an automated, accurate and robust solution for detecting and enforcing these dangerous violations, which threaten the safety of our children.”

Newton County Schools expect to have cameras issuing violations at the start of the 2012-2013 school year.
