City of Aventura
19200 West Country Club Drive
Aventura, Florida 33180
Based on “Crash Data” compiled for intersections in the City of Aventura enforced by the Intersection Safety Camera Program (Red Light Cameras), the number of accidents has been substantially reduced in the City.
The data focused on a three year period, January 1st of each year, until September 1st with the exception of 2010 which will only have data current as of August 26, 2010. This time frame was chosen as 2008 was the last year before the red light cameras until approximately September 2008 when the “Warning Period” was underway. In 2009 and 2010 the cameras were in place and have been operational for the entire duration.
The data shows that crashes citywide have dropped by 200 reported crashes (approximately 15%) for the same time frame from 2008 until 2010. Specificall at NE 199th Street/ W Country Club Drive, crashes have dropped by nearly 50%, from 17 to 9.
Even more telling though is the data for the NE 199th Street/Biscayne Boulevard Intersection. This location is constantly one of the highest crash locations in the city, and the site of numerous injury crashes. Crashes at this location have dropped from 60 in 2008 to 25 this year. This is a drop of roughly 60%.
Though crashes citywide have dropped, it is clear that at locations with red light cameras, the decreases are even greater.
“The original goal of the City Commission in adopting the Intersection Safety Camera Program was to make red light runners change their habits to prevent the accidents and injuries at key intersections in the community. The data clearly shows that the program is working and our motorists are safer” said Eric M. Soroka, City Manager
The following is a summary of the Data:
2008 2009 2010
Total crashes citywide reported 1395 1288 1195
W Country Club Dr/ NE 199th St 17 15 9
NE 199th St/ Biscayne Blvd 60 35 25
NE 192nd St. / W Country Club 23 17 17
Cameras operate 24 hours a day and capture images of every vehicle running a red light at the intersection. The program is administered by American Traffic Solutions, Inc. (ATS) with each violation reviewed and approved by the Aventura Police Department prior to issuance.
