The Effectiveness of Iowa’s Automated Red-Light Running Enforcement Programs

The objective of this research project was to evaluate the effectiveness of red-light cameras in Iowa.

Statewide, an analysis of red light running (RLR) crashes, using crash data from 2001 to 2006, indicates that an average of 1,682 RLR crashes occur at signalized intersections in Iowa every year. This accounts for 20.6% of all crashes and 35.0% of fatal and major injury crashes at signalized intersections. RLR crashes tend to be broadside and other types of more severe crash types.
