Shocking Video Reminds Drivers about the Consequences of Red-Light Running

Scottsdale, AZ—Today, video of a terrifying traffic collision, caught by Sarasota’s red-light safety cameras, was released on YouTube to raise awareness of the dangerous consequences when drivers fail to stop on red.

The video features a motorist traveling at high speeds through an intersection with a red-light, T-boning another vehicle causing it to spin 180 degrees in the air at NB N Washington Blvd @ Fruitville Road. View the shocking footage here.

“Our goal is to stop red-light violators and prevent collisions and injuries that result from running a red light. Drivers often make dangerous decisions at intersections and the results of red-light running can be tragic,” said Officer John Lake. “We are publicizing this program and encouraging people to slow down on yellow and stop on red. Hopefully now drivers are thinking twice before putting lives at risk and running the red light.”

Sarasota implemented its red-light safety camera program in December 2011. Since then, data continues to show a decline in dangerous driving. In the first eight months of the program, red-light running violations have decreased by 35 percent. Also, the program has found that ninety-six percent of the violations issued to vehicles and paid have not received a second violation, indicating a change in driver behavior.

Sarasota’s red-light safety camera program contributed $540,247 in funds dedicated toward parks, hospitals, medical research, and schools according to the Florida Department of Revenue in June 2012.
